Why gaming on Symbian sucks

Quick response to All About Symbian’s attempt to rationalize why gaming sucks on Symbian (vs. the iPhone).

I think his list is quite good. My thoughts basically echo’s the article:

  1. First off, the games are too expensive – we’re talking 3 to 5 times more expensive than your typical iPhone/iPod-touch game.
  2. Symbian is too hard to develop for—thus, most games are made in Java which yields the standard side-to-side, platform type games. YAWN. Add this to the fact that games are overpriced (accordingly on the effort to build them)…you have a limited appeal.
  3. Screens are too small.
  4. For the few touchscreens available (5800XM and N97) – no multi-touch. Consequently you can’t really implement complex touch games.
  5. The phone form-factor are crap for gaming—next to having an actual D-pad, they are not ideal gaming platforms.
  6. No hardware-based, 3D acceleration—not that it would matter—as no one can really develop for Symbian anyways.

You can have the best hardware, but without the support of developers, it will be doomed.

Symbian is dead to me. Well, almost dead. I’m waiting to see how the n97 plays out.

The more I think about it, you can probably say the same things about Google Android as well.
