ATI x1600 + Ubuntu 8.10 + Xorg 7.4 = Meh

I made an impulsive decision today to upgrade my Ubuntu box from 8.04 LTS to 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex).

In hind sight, that was not the best move, as I didn’t do any research, just made a slight change in the System -> Administration -> Software Sources application and hit the upgrade to 8.10. The reality is that I have no need to upgrade, but coming from a Gentoo background, I love cutting edge.

The system works fine. No real difference (although it broke my ISP config). So I have to recompile it.

The only thing you need to know, is that if you plan to use the ATI proprietary driver (fglrx), it doesn’t work with Xorg 7.4. Thus, no OpenGL acceleration, no transparent windows, no cool Compiz-Fusion effects.

Other than tabs within the Nautilus file browser, I don’t notice anything really that different—which is typical of an 8.10 release.
