I was busy at work today. Unfortunately I didn’t get much work done. Busy being a manager and managing people.
I’ve decided to take on the staff member from New Dehli and be his career manager. I figure if it doesn’t work out, well, it doesn’t work out. However, I think it’s the right thing to do.
It’s unfortunate to hear that Kevin’s washing machine overflowed and leaked sudsy water over his floor. Tough luck buddy. It’s nice to see the website up and running again.
For Kevin: Here’s a great article on “Hardening a Linux Webserver”. Just looking out for you man.
One of my colleagues at worked asked me what I knew about Search Engine Optimization. Here is the nickel & dime tour.
- Content is King – The text weight” ratio should be high.
- Keep the content accessible – Search engine robots / crawlers are heavily sided to text—images mean nothing. Consequently, provide text alternatives for imagery, Flash, and Streaming Media.
- Web-Standards = SEO – Well designed sites using CSS, Proper semantic structure (h1, h2, h3, div tags, etc.) will help optimize the way robots index your content.
- Meta-Tag-Soup – Use the < meta > tag to provide information about the page.
- Use simple URL aliases – Search engines don’t care about query strings in your URL. “http://www.domain.com/jobs” is more meaningful than “http://www.domain.com/section?=SIXC3792”
- Switch to decaf – Get rid of Javascript rollovers (Author’s note: I realise Javascript and Java are two entirely different things).
- Look Ma, no tables! – Tables disrupt the flow of content for the search engine robot as it indexes your site. Use tables only when necessary and provide the correct captions.
Cheers
Tai
